Abstract

The superficial peroneal nerve is a branch of the common peroneal nerve.  It courses in the anterolateral compartment of the leg and typically pierces the deep fascia cruris in the lower third of the leg, dividing into the medial and the intermediate dorsal cutaneous nerves of the dorsum of the foot.  All peripheral nerves are liable to compression and entrapment syndromes that may result in paraesthesia or pain.  The superficial peroneal nerve can become mechanically entrapped or damaged resulting in pain and/or paraesthesia in areas innervated by the nerve at the lateral ankle and dorsum of the foot.  The authors describe a successful case of surgical decompression of a superficial peroneal nerve but with an unexpected proximal egress from the deep fascia.
